My Day of Sadness – GOODBYE FSX!!!!!!!

Dear all,

After being an avid fan of aviation most of my life and enjoying the
freedom to ‘travel’ anywhere in the world in the sim for the past 8
years I’m having to give it up to save my sanity.

Over the years I’ve enjoying using FS9 then into FSX, purchased £100s
and £100s of pounds on add ons but more importantly spend thousands on
pc hardware and upgrades to get the best performance it can give. As
some of you know I have one heck of a high specification pc but that
all means nothing when you have a program like FSX which is so full of
bugs and errors which the FS Community fail to find solutions for.
Only 4 months ago I went from an i7 920 to a 980X and my 295GTX up to
a 480GTX, also changed my 1600 (8.8.8.24) DDR3 memory to 1600
(6.8.6.24), these 3 items cost me in excess of £1200 and what a waste
of money it’s been. This follows spending about £2000 building an
upgraded system about 12 months before and about £3000 18 months
before that.

I’ve become SO frustrated trying everything possible to get rid of the
dreaded errors and CTDs that besiege FSX. In Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) I
often got the dreaded Black Screen of Death, often caused by switching
to the desktop or simply clicking a menu and the graphics system
failing to redraw the screen though the sound continued. There was no
way out of it apart from closing the sim and starting again. I was
getting NTDLL.dll errors and more frustrating D3D.dll errors. Could
happily be flying along and between 10mins or over 2hrs the sim would
suddenly freeze with the hourglass, after a few mins an error report
would state the D3D.dll module has caused the crash. It’s the most
popular form of error in FSX but NO one knows how to fix it. I have
followed forums by NickN etc. It can happen on any part of the planet
or any aircraft so I know it’s not faulty scenery etc. Many say it
relates to the graphics driver or DirectX but they are both up to
date, Ive also tried older drivers. Ive tried adding lines into the
config file which flag a warning if textures etc fail to load as this
can cause CTDs but nothing.

I have worked solidly for the past 4 months pulling what little hair I
have left out to no avail. I’ve wiped the system, reinstalled the OS
and up-to-date drivers, installed the sim with minimal addons like
UTX, tried lowering overclocks on gpu and cpu, ran at stock speeds,
used a fresh vanilla config file, tried tweaks, tried various display
settings, tried adjusting graphic driver settings for AA, AF etc at
driver level and also forced through nvidia inspector but NOTHING
works. I managed to track down a copy of Windows XP 64 bit and set up
a dual boot and reinstalled FSX (after uninstalling it all from
Windows 7). Whilst things improved slightly like no more black
screens the D3D.dll error is still there so it can’t be an OS or
driver issue. Now my frustrations have increased since I upgraded the
hardware recently so as final tests I put the 295GTX back in and
whilst performance had diminished it appeared more stable but then the
crashes occurred again. I changed the memory back to the older one
with slower latency but still same, put my new modules back in and set
an XMP profile which made it 1800 C9 timings but again after all
seeming well it eventually crashed. I’ve downclocked everything well
below default too. The system has been tested for stability and
memtest run on all the modules with zero errors. The only other thing
I could test was putting the old 920 back in but after spending £700
on a new 980x cpu that is NOT an option. I thought I had it cracked
last night. As the error can occur anywhere I thought maybe it’s my
FS Global 2010 mesh, disabled it but nope crashed.

So after all this I’ve removed the whole flaming thing from my system,
ripped my Saitek Flight Yoke and Throttles off the desk and abandoning
it all for at least a year until MS Flight arrives. Perhaps it will
work better as FSX, whilst technically brilliant and the only thing I
really use on the pc, is also the biggest pile of s**t. I have NEVER
in my life come across a program that crashes so much on all my
systems which have different motherboards, cpus, hard disks, graphics
cards and OS.

I’ve made a lot of friends in the FS Community and this is the only FS
forum I post too, but in the interim it’s a goodbye to you all and I
hope to see you again sometime in the future when the next release
comes along. I’m sure I will still lurk about for any news but I wont
be simming as its diverted my attention too much lately from what’s
really important in life and left me so frustrated and probably not
great company.

All the best to you all

Sorry to read of your FSX troubles Chris and we'll all be sorry to lose
you. But, before you do depart, IIRC you're something of an overclocker
and memory timing tweaker. Am I right? If so I wonder how much of a
factor that is in the troubles you've experienced.

I would think that if your experience was typical then all fora and this
NG would be full of FSX users all having the same or similar problems.
But while I've read of various isolated problems, I've never seen
someone have quite the trouble you've had.

Still, I guess from reading your post that you've tried absolutely
everything which would include putting clock speeds and timing back to
default. It's a pity that the cause has to remain a mystery and the
hobby loses a once-ardent fan.

Regards

WOW! After spending all that money, and all the time you've spent tweaking,
what chance do we mere mortals have in running FSX satisfactory?

Sorry to see you go, Chris. PLEASE keep in touch with the group, there is so
much more to this group than just FSX, or indeed flight simming.

My Sim platform is running good actually, but isn't the fastest machine
by any means. Remember it took about one year to iron out the bugs in
FSX and that's with the help of many in this forum. There were crashes
due to that damn Zotac 9800GT board, and the SandBlaster audio would
behave badly. It's all worked out and the only thing left is getting the
weather engine to match ATC, and with AI traffic for end-to-end IFR
flights.

Ibby.. did you ditch that Zotac video board? and pull the SB audio and
run integrated sound? I remember suggesting thses things last year.

I'm with Iain here. What you have is a hardware issue, not a software
defect. 99% of the rest of us have no problem whatsoever, running far
lesser computers. You are apparently having a hardware breakdown or
interruption that bails out while addressing certain modules or .dll
files. That doesn't mean the file itself is bad, it is simply an
indication of what the computer was trying to access when it crashed.
Have you looked at your power supply? When you add more powerful RAM,
CPU voltages and video cards, it is easy enough to run out if your PS is
over-rated. Also, check temperatures for overheating. That is a biggie
when running FSX. Good luck. Sorry you gave up. It's a great
simulator for the rest of us.

So sorry to see You go Ibby, the place won't be the same without You,
hang in there

Just wondering if You use AI aircraft and flight plans as I have found
the errors that escape one in flight plans cause most of the problems I
have had including everything You mentioned.

I now use a small program called AI Flight Planner and I was totally
amazes to see just how many errors it found in all my flight plans which
if left unchecked caused the errors You mentioned.

I use FS9 with an AMD Opteron single core CPU running at 2.2G and I
have all WOAI plus plenty of my own Plans and I can fly into the worst
conditions like the JFK, EWR LGA area without a hitch.

Goodluck and stay cool as I know your frustrations

Ibby -

I have a system very similar to yours - 980x @ 4.43 - 1600 6-8-6-24 1T -
gtx480 w764 and it is the most beautiful experience I could imagine.

Sorry for your troubles but something is amiss with your system, not
necessarily FSX.

had you tried the uiautomationcore.dll swap for the black screens?

did you test each memory module SINGLY - no other slots occupied?

IAC, if you decide to jump in again - if I can be of any assistance - let me
know.

I really think you have a hardware mismatch of some type and/or a
conflicting driver of some sorts.

Best,

Hi Chris,
I sounds like you have done just about everything that you can possibly
do to resolve your FS problems. I have always believed that is something is
meant to be, then it will happen. But if something is NOT meant to be, then
nothing you can do that will make it happen. I have also always felt that
life is too short to be miserable, especially if you can do something about
it. If flight simming is no longer enjoyable to you, then you should go
ahead and give it up and focus on something that IS enjoyable to you. There
are plenty of things in life that are more important that flight simulation.
I do hope that you continue to check in here, and contribute to this
newsgroup though. We have really enjoyed your participation here. Take
care...

I have read your entire post, and I'm wondering if you tried to run FS9
again. Maybe the program might not look as good for you, but if it works
fine it might be better than just giving up on what you like to do.

[snipt for brevity]

Chris, if FS9 runs ok on your system, why not go back to that?

I symathise with your hatred of FSX. I hate it too. But I also
agree with those who say that in the end the solutions are with with
the hardware.

[rant mode ON]
But I still hate FSX - because it should run glitch-free and rock
solid, straight out of the box, no major geek interventions required,
when run on ANY system that satisfies the recommended system
requirements - AND IT DOES NO SUCH THING !!!

It is a dog. And I'm sick of the sim community making excuses for a
dog. You shouldn't have to hunt around newsgroups and forums for
elusive fixes. The thing is a time waster and it fails the most
basic tests of what a software consumer has the right to expect from a
decent product.

And MickeySoft, instead of taking responsibility for a dog of a
product, and either fixing it or offering full refunds (including
refunds for all add-ons etc, bought in good faith) just shut that
section down and ran for cover. Typical. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Out there in the real world, a class action would already be brewing,
but we simmers are way too busy talking shit and playing games to get
REAL it seems. OK then, so how about a SIMULATED class action? No?
OK...
[rant mode OFF]

I feel your pain Walt, I really feel your pain.

I too am getting a bit sick of all the problems I've run
into in FSX since I installed it a little over a month ago.
I just wish I hadn't uninstalled FS9 before I did.

I've started a list of recurring glitches, errors, problems
and deficiencies I've seen. The list is starting to get rather
lengthy and I'm getting more and more ticked off.

Just remember one thing... the bigger the fanfare and the more
hype there is, the worse something is going to be. FSX got a lot
of hype and fanfare when it came out. Things that are worth the
most get no hype. It's not needed.

And so now.... Microsoft has already begun to hype "Flight".

BTW.. you guys heard about the thing with Google stinging
Microsoft right? The thing with Bing? Freaking hilarious. MS
got busted big time. (Btw, btw... if you search Google about
this, e.g. "Bing rips off Google", you might want to do it
with Firefox, for SOME MYSTERIOUS REASON I can't view many of
the results of that search using MS Internet Explorer!! SHOCK!!)

Yep. Unelss one is a serious nerdygeek, FSX is just too "high
maintenance" to bother with. If it were a wife, you'd take her back
to her parents' place and dump her on the drive and accidentally kick
their trash can over on your way out.

I have no real evidence to back this up, but I suspect that FSX is a
product of the collusion between Microsoft and the payware add-on
developers to make the thing too difficult for the freeware developers
to bother with.

As I said, pure unfounded suspicion, but when I look at it from the
"cui bono" angle, this scenario is screaming at me.

It also makes sense from the politcal dogma which has America in its
grip. i.e. Payware is capitalism, freeware is socialism, and we all
know what capitalism thinks of socialism, ergo, freeware must be made
to disappear. As I said, cui bono?

I am continuously puzzled by the problems so many have with FSX. I
have a very run-of-the-mill system, out of the box, 3 year old Gateway
desktop computer yet it runs FSX all day long at 30 fps with very few
problems. It makes me think that a compatability of components rather
than high-end componenets is the key.

I don't really have anything bleeding edge or new. I'm running a Quad
Core 9650 with a modest but adequate nVidia card (GeForce GTX 260).

Oddly, sometimes FSX will run great for hours and hours on end. And
then, out of nowhere, it'll crash to desktop, return "out of memory
errors" or just simply lock-up hard from say, something as simple as
hitting the GPS/NAV switch when I'm on final (that's happened 4 times
recently - wtf GPS/NAV?). And then, mysteriously after restarting FSX,
it runs flawlessly for a many more hours.

It's really very erratic. I don't get it.

Could do it about 3 1/2 times a week in a Gulfstream (with

Yep. Unelss one is a serious nerdygeek, FSX is just too "high
maintenance" to bother with. If it were a wife, you'd take her back
to her parents' place and dump her on the drive and accidentally kick
their trash can over on your way out.
Heh. Believe it or not, I actually did that to an ex-girlfriend that
turned out to be a hopeless alcoholic. I'd simply had it up to here
with her and dumped her drunken ass on the parking strip. That was it
for her.

I have no real evidence to back this up, but I suspect that FSX is a
product of the collusion between Microsoft and the payware add-on
developers to make the thing too difficult for the freeware developers
to bother with.
I have a similar suspicion with Anti-virus software companies. I have
long suspected that they intentionally release viruses in order to keep
us as customers.

She did indeed have redeeming qualities, when sober.

That was the problem. One taste of beer or liquor and an hour
later she was three sheets to the wind. Time after time I had
to drag her home, clean up her puke deal with her hangover
bitchiness the next morning. One day it just got to be too much.

"Sorry honey, you're outa here".

Well, Ibby,

too much tweaking an too 'much' hardware might not be the solution, then.

5 years ago I had a PC on which FS 9 ran flawlessly, no chance for FSX
though.

I mothballed FSX until 3 years ago I got a used, then near high end
gaming machine from a college's son for 600 Euros, no idea of the exact
specifications, I'm not so much into hardware. Installed FSX and from
the start it ran smoothly with all sliders to the right. Even at London
City I get frame rates of 15, which with FSX is perfectly fly- and landable.

So my experience is, that the performance of FSX does not depend on
expensive hardware, but on hardware components that are 'made for each
other'.

May be a dedicated, not so expensive gaming machine 'from the shelf' may
do the trick for you?

Dear all,
After being an avid fan of aviation most of my life and enjoying the
freedom to ‘travel’ anywhere in the world in the sim for the past 8
years I’m having to give it up to save my sanity.

I've had moments like that. I find a cheap bottle of red wine can help.
Then a bit of a rest doing something else. Then back at the problem.

I hope you have a massive power supply running that rig.

I'll go back to my wine now.

Sorry to learn of your frustration Chris. As you may know I am new to FSX
using my old single core but after tweaking advise here, turning off
antivirus (big difference), put in landclass, textures some third party
stuff I am still improving performance and now have sliders further to the
right than before and getting 18 - 20 FPS most of the time. Graphics look
great to me. I only have a Nvdia 6200 running.
However trying to approach or take off from one airport I kept registering a
crash at 3000 ft which was very frustrating. I removed my last download
which was another airport down the line update 3rd party. Once that was
removed there was no further problems. That was the 2nd software prob.
Anyway the point is probs may all be software. Maybe back up your developed
copy and start again from default put in some scenery and aircraft and
rebuild slowly checking the system as you go. If you have a major at this
stage well, hey indoor bowls is a great activity.....

Good advise there. I'm afraid I may have to do this myself. I'm
afraid I've gone a bit hogwild installing a lot of free stuff I
probably don't really need.

Which sort of depresses me since it initially took 3 install attempts
and uninstalls in between to get FSX to actually boot up (my first
indication that FSX wasn't exactly a stable, bug free application). :/

Give FSX a rest and revert to FS9 for a month or so, then have another go at FSX with a fresh mind
and maybe a few fresh ideas. Having spent so much money and effort on a great system it must be ever
so frustrating not to get the thing operating to the full but it must also be worth trying again.
Perhaps after a short break to fully clear the mind the solution will present itself.

At any rate best wishes and do keep on lurking and posting.

I am in the same boat, as I have slowly been weaned off of FS. It was
becoming a consuming addiction where had no social life and was
developing square eyes from staring at my screen for so long. I can
say that my new 'puter doesn't even have the sim installed partly due
to the fact that the re-install seem like such a daunting task, what
with all the mods and tweaks I had done mostly due to the input from
the wizards here.

I must admit that I still visit AVSIM to keep abreast of my favorite
hobby of years gone by, but refrain from any downloading. In
addition, I still subscribe to this forum and am a regular lurker,
just 'cause I can't seem to stay away. The wit, the jokes, derogatory
comments and asshole trolls keep me amused, plus I can get a bird's
eye view of the SIM without having to open FS.

Nothing personal guys, I have just moved on and can now concentrate on

Well, having been a long tem in-depth "researcher" of online porn, I
can authortatively state that the genre has become so distorted that
they are going for more and more depravity in order to come up with
new material. It got so bad I canned it and took up flight simming.
And my eyesight has nearly returned to normal. :-)

Ibby.. see the following:

-----------------------------------------
Posted 07 April 2008 - 06:24 AM

Well, I might have found a solution!

Browsing this forum, I tried out a few tips. First, I set the vista
taskbar to auto-hide. Then I changed the fsx compatibility settings (by
right-clicking the icon) to

1) disable visual themes
2) disable desktop composition

Thirdly, I switched off the vista sidebar and everest ultimate prior to
running fsx. Still running vista in window mode that fills the whole
screen (by choosing maximize on taskbar), with the secondary monitor
displaying sim charts, active sky etc.

Result: for the first time on this machine, I have been able to do a
flight without a ctd for a significant amount of time - namely 2.6 hrs,
island hopping with a baron 58 around the hawaiian islands (that
megasceneryX hawaii is truly gorgeous). I visited a total of 5 different
airports. I also had a much smoother overall experience, with less
stuttering and much fewer drops in fps. With most of the scenery sliders
set almost all the way to the right (maximum) including

global texture resolution: very high
level of detail radius: large
scenery complexity: extremely dense
autogen density: extremely dense
mesh complexity: 30
mesh resolution: 5m
texture resolution: 60cm

and finally traffic slider to 100% (!) with ultimate traffic x, I ended
up with almost an almost consistent fps of 25!!!

I finally get some results out of this expensive, custom-built
mega-machine. Well, I will not celebrate too early, but it's a
significant improvement as before I could only fly for max 30 mins and
had much more stuttering.

Now I will with a long-haul flight in the default 747 (honolulu intl -
klax) then I will play around in the lds767 (will hold my breath a bit
then).

Cheers!

bugs and errors which the FS Community fail to find solutions for.

Well, I might have found a solution!

Great news! Now that You have the "aero" turned off, you might try running
full-screen. I find it increases my frame rates by 200%. Of course, you
can't use the other monitor...
