Discussion:
Propeller Synchronizer in Twin Otter

I fly several Twin Otters in fs2002. All have the prop synch feature that
can be activated. All manuals mention that the Twin Otter has this feature
but none explain it's function and when to use it. I 'discovered' when
activated that the props seem to run more silently and that torque
increases.
What does prop synch do in general and when do you use it in fs2002 with
what results?

prop sync pecludes harmonic inbalance induced stress to aircraft componebt.
prop sync during t/off approach and landing, same for auto-feather. the prop
sync does what it states: it makes sure the props are spinning at the same
r.p.m. Auto feather disengages the prop if the engine(s) fail and saves
losing too much speed trying to do the job yourself

Not sure that you should see an increase in torque - certainly not its
purpose.
Essentially it synchronises the rotation of one propeller so that so that
has the same RPM and also the tips of the blades are "in phase". In other
words both reach the 12 o'clock position at the same time. This eliminates
the slow droning sound or beat frequency when the props are not
synchronised.

Prop sync is only switched on once you have commenced climb conditons. It
is normally off during takeoff and landing as you want the full flexibility
to adjust pitch and feather a dead engine if required.

Autofeather is a feature that automatically feathers the prop if an engine
loses power or has its power cut on takeoff. Very valuable if you loose one
engine in a twin just after you're committed to a takeoff. You have to act
very quickly and in a precise sequence to maintain flight. Autofeather
helps in 2 ways - it immediately minimises drag on the dead engine and by
observing the torque meters you can confirm which engine has in fact lost
power.

These skills are very important for twin engine pilots - unfortuneately
there have been too many instances where pilots have not kept themselves
current with the necessary procedures and have perished.

Test out your skills on the KingAir by reducing the power on one engine to
idle after takeoff and see if you can make altitude and return for a save
landing. Make sure you know where the rudder and aileron trim controls are
located!

Happy Flying,
John
