When I try to set the cockpit view to normal mode (not virtual) all I

Are you referring to 2D cockpit VS the default 3D?
Do you even have the mini gauges? if so pressing W should bring back
your full 2D cockpit.

Are you using F10 to switch to the 2D panels and F9 to switch back to 3D
panels?
Once in 2D use "A" to cycle the views within a category.

Yes, the virtual cockpit view is normal. But when I get to forward 2d
view, nothing, no panel at all. I hit F10 and use the A key, nothing.
Just a full screen of the scenery. Could I have a software problem?
I'm running out of hope here.

Relax my son. I have the best brains working on it as we speak though
Sir Isaac Newton keeps asking "What's a computer?"

^^^ What I do that, I nothing changes. When I scroll over areas where
the panel should be, you can see that a box pops up to describe the
particular function, such as this:

I'm pretty sure that you have the 2-D panel set to 100% transparency.

Solution: Start FSX. Choose Settings -> Customize -> Aircraft -> 2-D panel
transparency (%):

If on 100 %, then turn it to 0 %, and you've your 2D panel back.

Nah ,wasn't me with the problem but it had me stumped none the less. Was
pretty simple in the end. (Well, it sure fitted the symptoms though c172
hasn't replied that I can see)

Do windows open up (Shift+1 ,2 etc)?

No, SHIFT+whatever doesn't work. For example, SHIFT+F10 doesn't bring
up the Kneeboard. Nothing at all happens. I've waited all year for
this to come out, I'm so irritated now. Someone please help.
